Additional AU history: This particular version of Haru recorded her memories of the future immediately after their return, and after serious contemplation and list-making of pros and cons, demands a greater position in the Family once they are promoted from middle school to high school. Tsuna refuses to give her a combatant position despite Reborn being impressed by her Will to be involved in the Family. Instead, Reborn offers her an apprenticeship with the Vongola’s trading division. The black market traders train her extensively in defensive combat styles gifting her with a telescoping bo staff, an A-Class thunder ring, and a corresponding box weapon containing butterflies once they’re invented.
In the beginning they use her as a leaping point to extend their trade to Japan, but by the end of high school they are genuinely fond of Haru and greatly respect her keen numerical mind and diligence to making the Vongola Family profit. She rises steadily, taking over the Japanese trade entirely when she graduates high school, and continuing to assume control slowly and surely of trade in Italy and internationally as the Ninth generation takes to their retirement and the Tenth steps into their positions. Her control over the Vongola’s trade essentially gives her power over their purse strings and almost the entirety of their expenditures. Her power is incredibly subtle, though, and largely unacknowledged outside the inner circles of the Black Market, and the Vongola Family.
Thus, to many of the other Families it seems like Haru is an odd addition to the Tenth Vongola’s Family, and they largely can’t figure out what purpose she serves as he already has a wife, and she’s not seen with any single guardian more than they others. Eventually, the rumor mill determines she must either be pathetically waiting for Kyoko to tire of the mafia life and leave Tsuna, or she must actually be his mistress on the side. Neither of these rumors are true, of course, she grew out of her crush on Tsuna in high school, but it doesn’t keep the assumptions and snide comments at social events from stinging just a little.
The rumors and stigma of being considered the other woman serve to isolate her within the mafia community outside of work and the immediate Family as she ages. She throws herself further into work because she takes pleasure in it, but still deep down desires a love connection to rival the one her best friends have made. She’s given up on dating mafiosos after one too many encounters with men attempting to seduce her solely because they believe she’s the Vongola Tenth’s mistress.
The Varia have settled down, not into following Tsuna exactly, but at the very least following the general same direction in which the Family is operating in. Through their constant surveillance and information network they keep aware of everyone in Tsuna’s family and where the weak points or Varia Quality might be found. Haru, though a mostly defensive combatant is found to be lonely and in an incredibly powerful almost entirely unnoticed position in the Family. No one wants to draw attention to how and where they keep their money after all.
Xanxus finds her a perfect target to gain a stronger foothold in the main Vongola Family, and while he’s no longer rash enough to think he’ll be able to use her as a spy or control her entirely, he begins to woo her operations base into Varia territory with promise of extra security and simply by paying attention to her, or having himself or his commanders escort her to the social events she used to have to suffer through in quiet humiliation. So Haru’s canon point is an awkward place where she’s torn between her loyalty to Tsuna his desire to legitimize the Vongola and her newer forming relationships within the Varia and the darker side of the mafia while continuing to operate with her own subordinates within the Black Market.
PERSONALITY:
Haru is the ultimate overachiever. Within the span of her canon personality she often dedicated so much effort to her plans she sabotaged herself on accident. Like the time she was trying to scare kids and get Tsuna to save them, she actually got arrested because she had a knife as part of her monster costume. She grows out of this with the advent of her AU training within the Black Market system. Rather than being faced with the consequences of a school girl’s fumbling she is suddenly faced with financial consequences and the responsibility evens out her manic tendency to over plan and over react through the course of her apprenticeship.
As a young girl Haru used costumes for her schemes and as escapes from her reality as a slightly nerdy, too smart for her own good, mother less middle schooler. They were a fantastic hobby she could dedicate the intensity of her attention to. As an adult in this AU, she continues to use costumes, no longer as escapes, but as effective and efficient tools to protect herself. In contrast, her somewhat plain appearance by the standards of Western beauty serves as another tool for her, one that hurts her pride as a woman sometimes, but comes in useful when she avoids identification, or can manage to seem harmless because of it. In effect, she has learned to use her own body as a costume as an adult.
Haru displays in alternate proportions absolutely no common sense, but also an acute awareness of things in the world. She’s often dumbfounded by the reasons why someone would insult another person, or be nasty to them in general from a petty standpoint. It isn’t within her grasp to understand the concept of insults without it being a maneuver to acquire information or more power in a business situation. However in this AU, she is intimately familiar with the workings of violence from the position of dealing it out to protect herself and her tradespeople and the position of being a victim of attacks on her person as she conducts business. Based on her OU childhood leaps of logic about predators and other criminals in Namimori, Haru is often one to plan for the worst case scenario and be relieved when the best case or a middling scenario actually occurs.
While AU Haru has undoubtedly become more serious and somber in her position of power and responsibility within the Vongola at her heart she still has similar desires and fears she had in middle school. She has just become much more adept at facing or hiding them within herself. Outside of extreme situations like missions or negotiations she still wears her heart on her sleeve, smiling and scowling, giving the Guardians what for when they spend too much of the money she’s attempting to manage, or scolding the Varia when they are too reckless with their property damage.
She is still on the surface, a very cheerful and supportive person. Haru takes strength in the necessity of her position within the Family, and her ability to make sure everyone has the funds and goods they need to complete their jobs, plus have a little fun besides. Her dedication to her family and their needs is what keeps her going while her personal life and desires for a husband and family of her own stall out and remain unmoving, in part because of how much time and energy she spends on the Family instead.
ABILITIES:
Haru will never be anywhere near guardian levels of power, however she has learned a couple of hand to hand defensive combat styles designed to be as vicious as possible and remove her enemies quickly: the Keysi Fighting Method and Krav Maga. In addition to the hand-to-hand she is proficient in the use of a metal telescoping staff she can feed her thunder flames through.
Her flames are channeled through a single A-Class thunder ring that she has never come close to breaking and she has one box animal compatible with her, a box of butterflies than can coalesce into a single butterfly used for escape in flight. Their main use, though, is as a flock that delivers charged attacks serving as distractions for her to incapacitate or very rarely, kill her opponents faster.
Outside of combat, Haru is mathematical genius. She is incredibly adept at manipulating and formulating numbers, particularly when it comes to practical usage rather than theoretical. She puts this to use through expert manipulation of the Vongola’s finances and their trade in the Black Market. She becomes adept at quiet covert trading and the concealment of goods.
Her final ability is her ability to continue to cosplay, or disguise herself in order to keep her identity as head of the Vongola trade a secret. Under super close inspection she could be identified by someone who knew her very well or had extra intuition, but against strangers her disguises are very effective.
SINS & VIRTUES:
I am uncertain of the best place for Haru, so I have outlined her sins and virtues as I see them and leave it to the mod’s discretion.
Envy: While Haru has grown out of her crush and childhood love of Tsuna, she still covets the position of respect and behind-the-scenes power Kyoko is afforded as his wife.
Kindness: She will do whatever she can for her Family when they ask it of her, without complaint. Haru will even attempt to do things for them or solve problems before they can ask it of her.
Wrath: A development of Haru being involved in the Black Market and recruiting underlings of her own to transport goods and guard them is her absolute dedication to the eradication of anyone who tries to keep her people from making it home to their families.
Diligence: Haru has not stopped working since she was given to them for her apprenticeship in her efforts to streamline and elevate the Vongola Black Market.
